The role of reed godparent includes:

      • participating in common meetings of reed projects when possible,
      • tell about COFREEN and its goals, actions and actors when in proper context,
      • help in networking when necessary and
      • improve the flow of information between projects and within the reed field.

Godparent in Estonia - Siim Sooster

Siim Sooster is a reed entrepreneur with 20 years of experience. Siim's company Rooexpert OÜ harvests reed, thatches roofs (mainly in Estonia, but also in Finland and Denmark) and cleans wetlands. Siim is an author of the book on reed thatching and a regular trainer for local reed entrepreneurs.

Siim Sooster agreed to become a Godfather of the COFREEN project because he wants to maintain thatching tradition in Estonia and would like to be the tutor for project seminars.

Godparent in Latvia - Andris Urtāns

Mr. Andris Urtāns is hydrobiologist and project manager in Nature Conservation Agency and North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve, where coordinates development projects, site planning processes and cooperation with neighbours.

Andris Urtāns agreed to become a godparent of the COFREEN project because he is interested and fascinated by the main idea of the project - to find a balance between the use of reed for business and environmental protection.

He says: "Reeds are part of the ecosystem, but it is essential to manage them sustainably, especially in protected nature territories!"

Godparent in Finland - Eija Hagelberg

Mrs. Eija Hagelberg is a project manager in Baltic Sea Action Group, a foundation committed to the protection of Baltic Sea.

She says: "I have experience about Reed in many perspectives, as I worked previously in the Interreg IV A project "Reed Strategy in southern Finland and Estonia". Nowadays I work with agri-environmental issues and Reed comes close to it. I hope I can enhance harvesting of Reed through my work by helping to improve the subsidies for Reed harvesting."

Eija is responsible in gathering Finnish key nutrient recycling experts (in the frame of Baltic Sea Action Group and Järki-project activities) in the Gundby farm 10.11.2011. There is a aim to discuss how nutrient recycling could be better adopted into Finnish Agri-Environment Programme and in the farm level activities. Reed is also in focus! Eija is actively participating in the national working group of allocation of coming Agri-Environment supports in Finland 2014 and works in several regional and national groups connected with water protection and enhancement of biodiversity.
